Wasal Marketplace

Wasal is one of Morocco's leading online marketplaces, connecting over 100,000 users with hundreds of merchants through a modern shopping experience across web and mobile. The platform hosts more than 200,000 products and integrates with multiple payment and logistics providers to deliver a seamless nationwide commerce experience.

I joined the engineering team during a critical growth phase, where I helped design and implement the platform's core architecture. Working across backend services, web applications, mobile apps, and infrastructure, I contributed to building a scalable marketplace capable of supporting rapid business growth.

The Challenge

Building a marketplace goes far beyond creating an online store. Every component—from authentication and inventory management to order processing, payments, and logistics—must work together reliably while remaining scalable and maintainable.

The platform also needed to support:

• Thousands of active users.
• Hundreds of thousands of products.
• Multiple payment providers.
• Seven third-party logistics (3PL) partners.
• Seller management tools.
• Customer-facing web and mobile applications.
• A growing engineering team requiring a scalable architecture and development workflow.

My Role

As a Software Engineer, I helped establish the technical architecture that became the foundation of the marketplace.

My responsibilities included:

• Designing scalable backend architecture.
• Developing core marketplace services.
• Building customer web and mobile experiences.
• Developing the seller portal.
• Designing APIs connecting all platform services.
• Establishing engineering best practices.
• Driving architectural decisions across the engineering team.
• Collaborating closely with product, marketing, sales, and operations teams.

What I Built

Marketplace Backend

Developed and maintained critical marketplace services including:

• Authentication
• Orders
• Inventory Management
• Seller Dashboard APIs
• Payment integrations
• Marketplace business logic

These services formed the backbone of the marketplace ecosystem.

Customer Applications

Contributed to the development of:

• Customer mobile application
• Marketplace web platform
• Shared APIs between mobile and web

ensuring a consistent user experience across platforms.

Seller Portal

Built features allowing merchants to:

• Manage products
• Track inventory
• Process orders
• Monitor marketplace activity

giving sellers complete control over their storefronts.

Payment & Logistics Integrations

Integrated the marketplace with:

• CMI payment gateway
• Seven third-party logistics providers (3PLs)

creating a seamless order fulfillment pipeline from checkout to delivery.

Technical Leadership

Beyond feature development, I played a key role in shaping the platform's engineering practices.

This included:

The experience taught me how to design software that balances scalability, maintainability, and business needs while collaborating across engineering, product, marketing, and operations teams.
